Maybe because food industry companies don’t use “Vegan” as part of their branding? And they don’t sell vegan or glorify ? *** Labels…like someone, “I am a vegan”… bitch…they are contacting with animal secretions…lmao

In the restaurant industry, I cannot tell you how many vegan “restaurants” have closed recently. I think many of them over-invested thinking that the drive for veganism would shoot up more than it did. There is a lot of competition in the average restaurant space.
Especially at the fast casual / quick service / fast food level, vegan cuisine faces a lot of market difficulty. Most meat eaters won’t go out of their way to eat at a vegan place, and many vegans can cook their vegan food at home and frequent concerns about cross contamination can scare vegan consumers away from vegetarian/general establishments. They live and die by those early adopters, and that’s a much smaller market.
There’s also, at least to me, a downturn in flexitarian eating (my anecdotal experience of noticing fewer non-vegan friends eating out at places I suggest). Domino’s, Little Caesars, & Papa Johns all these vegan items (in the US, at least) precisely because pizza is an easily veganized item, and those businesses we’re others to skip washing/sanitizing extra dishes/utensils/frying oil/gringders.

Exactly this! Most people don’t understand how businesses operate… especially restaurants. I’ve been in that industry for 15 years and the profit margins on a vegan restaurant are just dead on arrival without meat and alcohol sales it’s incredibly difficult to make money. Especially when the number of vegans is significantly lower, and the ones who are vegan make other diet choices like other sensitivities on top of that. The numbers just don’t add up to be profitable.

i live in a major city and you can eat vegan many places. i have been vegan for 10 years. recently i traveled to northern virginia to see my grandbaby. i had to drive 40 minutes to find a restaurant with vegan options. it does make me wonder how food chains f***ing survive in certain areas. how do regular people eat the shitty food these chains serve? and why is there always a chilis but never a vegan restaurant?? granted i eat exclusively vegan but the options are abundant and delicious. meat eaters could totally eat vegan food. i dont understand many things.
> 2024-06-22
Those things are full of sugar and carbs, not healthy. Overpriced and I wouldn’t walk through the door. I would rather cook.
> 2024-06-22
The places my non vegan friends have taken me are fun places to eat. I have never eaten at ByChloe’s but it was more than just food more like an event. While I prefer this approach I can see how they can close doors quickly when there is a lot of competition.

Fast food chains can slowly introduce items on their menu and spend very little money marketing it and getting the product in front of millions of people every year.
You can create a stand alone vegan restaurant in a much smaller market and spend tons of money trying to get the product in front of people thanks to less and less foot traffic in our malls. It can also be tough to find available property near one of those fast food chains because of how all of our cities are designed for cars. Very few of us live in real livable communities that encourage mass walking and public transportation. Then add in the fact that you have to hire a staff to run a restaurant, while the fast food business can run all day long with very few people. Further complicating your life is that many of the people you need to hire don’t want to work at some fringe vegan lounge and your fighting fast food chains and non vegan restaurants for these people.
Hard to compete with dollars and profits when our cities don’t build for people anymore.

Companies that can rely on cutting corners make more money.
Companies that rely on innovation make less money.
Whole Foods reduces it’s prices, but how many smaller stores simply lose customers to them?
> 2024-06-22
The one in my old town closed down a while back ☹️ was the only place nearby to get vegan food and now its just a overpriced health food cafe
> 2024-06-22
We have one local and it may be good but the prices are outlandish. $25 for a cheese fries. I understand they use a lot of ingredients to make vegan but damn that’s just highway robbery.
> 2024-06-22
Beetbox in Pittsburgh was awesome but didn’t survive the lockdowns. I still make the recipes from its cookbook!
> 2024-06-23
You mean restaurants run by actual vegans? They usually have the menu up online. And all they do is serve ridiculously overpriced food. $20 for a soup and small sandwich. And once the novelty wears off, it’s not worth the price.
> 2024-06-23
Gee I can’t image why a vegan fast food chain would fail. It’s a mystery.
>> 2024-06-23
There’s a lot of them that are pretty successful. They’re still around too.
>>> 2024-06-23
A “chain” implies multiple. Not any in my neck of the woods.
> 2024-06-23
There’s one near me with an extremely limited selection are one ridiculous price points. It’s like zero hypocrisy vegan too which if you wanted to reach the most people I’m not sure is the right choice?
> 2024-06-23
I feel like all the vegan shit needs to be phasing out. It seems like one of the most backwards trends with the amount of adjustments they’re making to overly processed foods. From what I read most of them don’t even taste good.
> 2024-06-23
My theory is that’s partly because of the amount of competition within the restaurant industry as well as the change in dynamics and expectations of vegans in modern western societies.
Most vegans prefer to stay at home and budget and it’s much easier to substitute vegan alternatives at home than it is to buy vegan alternatives. I think many vegans traditionally stay budget minded and struggle to even eat high quality food at home being vegan without significant up charge.
I’m going to assume places like McDonald’s are paying rent in proportion to demand. So if the restaurant isn’t high volume, they probably pay significantly less in rent.
I’m quickly reminded of this small vegan restaurant in my county. They ended up expanding last year. From 2 tables to 7 tables. Significantly increased their square footage and haven’t done much to improve the menu.
I also find that price point reflects very poorly with the amount gained. Before I became vegan, I could visit most fast food cafe locations and stuff 2 meals into a $10 budget. Drinks included. Try doing that with a vegan restaurant. It’s nearly impossible unless you really like fries.
I’ve found vegan friendly restaurants do fine if they are eaten at a must have location or if the staff have catering experience. I do think the market will eventually even itself out and expand to vegan restaurants eventually. A lot of the locations where I live closed down during covid and owners not caring about the industry. A lot of the places I go to were established around 2019-2020 and are actually booming. A lot of people that visit them are vegan heads or newbies trying to go vegan while balancing their existing life style.
As a vegan, it is exciting to be a part of this journey. A lot of people see the popularity of it through restaurants and feel left out because the restaurant they expected to visit for their favorite meal is closed. Most vegans I know don’t recommend vegan restaurants because they get busy quick and they can make the meals at home. I’m financially independent and spend about $300-$400 on high quality vegan groceries. I try not to eat too much at home and go to vegan restaurants as much as possible. At the same time, I’m into the whole movement. I think it’s so cool to go outside in public and see a whole restaurant full of vegans. Money is one part but if vegans don’t have good dining options and the discrimination from the previous generations stays alive for a bit longer. They’ll have to progress and move into the restaurant industry.
One vegan cafe I think that does a great job is called Plum Bistro in Seattle. It’s my favorite vegan Cafe and the Chef actually gives back to the local community over time.

I hate that, by Chloe in Philly just closed like this week. It’s literally the only 100% vegan restaurant we have😭
> 2024-06-23
I personally love vegan food, but your entire market base consists of what, 1% of the population? Not a bode model especially since many eater vegans won’t make it a point to go there.

By Chloe stunk. It was ridiculously overpriced veggies and vegan Seitan. I went there for a decent salad. It wasn’t. I could get a somewhat decent salad at Chipotle. That’s Bh Chloe’s problem. Why on earth would I go there when I can get a better salad at Chipotle for 1/2 the price?

Because McDonalds will produce ten $10 burgers with basically everything a vegan needs.
> 2024-06-23
I always get two items at my local salad restaurant: the salad and the vegan meatball sub. The staff looked puzzled that the vegan would order a cold salad. \[shrug\]
> 2024-06-23
We had two “Bottle and Bottega” stores in my city. It’s a BYOB painting party. The business model works on large groups. They’ve both been closed for years.
The right hand of the pyramid is that they only allow 21 year olds and up. The left hand of the pyramid is their food options. Bags of chips for sale and Dominoes pizza for $3 a slice.
The only people that are inspired to go to a painting party are kids that are 18+ to 21. The ratio of 21 year old drinkers to 18-21 year old drinker/takers is probably like 1:20.

I live in rural Pennsylvania and 90% of the people think eating at Arby’s is a delicacy. Ain’t NO WAY vegan or even sadly vegetarian is getting any business here.
> 2024-06-24
Because restaurants in general are a risky business and a large percentage of them go under within the first few years. Being a vegan restaurant just further restricts your audience and adds to the difficulty.
The number of small restaurants I’ve seen open up with a no meat or pescatarian focused focus that end up adding meat to the menu is pretty high.
> 2024-06-24
Sōl burger is an awesome vegan burger place in bishop arts area of Dallas!!!!

I’ve always had the same question. I absolutely LOVED going to by Chloe in Greenwich village. Like I’d go out of my way to eat there on my lunch break, before or after a planned date in the area or to just grab coffee. The closure seemed very sudden, unfortunately. I agree with everyone else that in order to survive the vegan restaurant, you need to be someplace that can sustain that type of spot. In Clinton hill Brooklyn, we (spouse and I) had a vegan sushi spot that is no more. This area is relatively affluent, but as outside influences affect the overall costs of things, including going out to eat, folks here will prioritize cost over vegan options.
> 2024-06-24

Technically the Chicago-style hotdog restaurants are vegan: Vienna beef hotdogs oil your grilled onions, Mushrooms’ peppers, a slab of melted cheddar cheese over the ersatz substitutes any you’ve got yourself a Chicago hotdog!

There was a vegan place here in Gainesville for several years when I first moved here in 2019 (The Top). I now live on a farm that raises meat animals, admittedly, but I find it impossible not to recognize the direct connection that happens between a producer and a consumer, so I’ve drastically reduced the amount of animal product I eat and have a kind of half assed “homesteader” diet but that’s entirely beside the point.
Even when I have a whole ass freezer full of chicken or beef, or am able to stomach eating milk or eggs, every time I drive by the spot this place used to occupy, I’m like sad that the only really good source of both “ethnic” food and vegan food is gone.
I’ve been trying to find a comparable plate of nachos for 5 years now, man, let me tell you, and I think I may be forever ruined by theirs.
It was a really cool place too. It’s gone now :
> 2024-06-25
Easy answer: There’s not enough vegans to sustain a “chain” of restaurants nation wide. So a local vegan restaurant has trouble filling 300 seats a day.
>>> 2024-06-30
There’s not enough real vegans in the local market with disposable income to support a vegan restaurant.
>>>>> 2024-07-06
Ah, right… Lol. Don’t you mean “not a racist” through and through?
> 2024-06-25
Because there’s a lot more people craving meat than those that are craving salvador dali type art installations that come in the form of food. Bulk restaurants are about supplying the majority regardless of health issues. If the majority was allergic to an ingredient in ice cream then Baskin Robbins would not have that ingredient maybe.
> 2024-06-25
I could be mistaken by i think it comes down to the community behind it and the volume it pulls in.
The vegan community just *doesn’t* spend on that on the scale that any other demographic does, in respects to volume. the bigger national chains offer vegan options because the target demo is so large, it doesnt really matter that much thatvegan options are a minor (kek)part of their overall investment strategy.
At the end of the day, it all gets boiled down to How much money is being charged per plate, vs how many people are putting money int hat plate that doesnt add up at the end of the fiscal year.
Those places trying to appeal to that demo arent producing enough on a large enough scale to keep things moving, or are simply ignoring very basic concepts of scale to begin with.
Its the reason stuff like all-you-can-drink establishments were a thing. you might be selling drinks for cheaper than normal, or making far less money then you usually would on some reciepts… but the volume more than makes up the difference at the end of the day.

They tried something in the Toronto area, its at the Eaton Center downtown, they have a full vegan menu. I have never been, but probably should visit. I am in Florida on vacation and looking for vegan food to eat, there so many fast food chains with their fries, Impossible burgers, or salads, sometimes all 3.
