According to the legend, when it was time to found the city of Athens, two gods vied for patronage: Poseidon, the god of the sea, and Athena, the goddess of war and wisdom.

Poseidon’s Offering

• Poseidon, recognizing Greece as a predominantly mountainous and arid territory with limited access to fresh water, offered the city a source of water.

Athena’s Counteroffer

In response, Athena provided an olive tree. The olive tree not only provided shade for rest but also yielded olive oil – a valuable resource in ancient times.

The Triumph of Athena

Athena’s offering won over Poseidon’s, and as a result, the city came to be known as Athens, bearing the name of its victorious patron deity.
